Poker Education – The Logic of Chance

Did you know there’s a guy who got struck by lightning not once, not twice, but seven times?

His name was Roy Cleveland Sullivan, and he worked as a park ranger in Virginia. Between 1942 and 1977, lightning zapped him seven separate times and he survived them all. Roy eventually made it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the human equivalent of a lightning rod.

Now, here’s the thing: lightning strikes are extremely rare. The odds of being struck in your lifetime are about 1 in 10,000 – 20,000 apparently. The odds of being struck seven times? The numbers quickly get cosmic – in human proportions: impossible.

So, was Roy just ‘ casually lucky’? Or did his environment, (bad) habits, job, and choices play a role in upping those odds?

Poker ≠ Luck, but you Gotta Get Lucky – It’s a Skill

A lot of people talk about poker like it’s about luck. It is, but it’s by sitting at the table, making a few wild plays, winning a couple flips, then walking away like having solved the game, that one abands its poker fate to chance – which is ok by the way. It’s not very different from playing casino games. It all comes down to ambition.

Let’s do something dramatically unromantic. Let’s compare ‘getting good at poker’ with ‘finding the love of your life’. It’s a bit about luck because many human interactions are extremely superficial by definition, but it’s also about setting goals and nurse favorable habits. If you don’t take care of yourself and behave like a toxic person as a standard, maybe it’s not really because of looks and physique that finding a partner, is difficult. When humans go to the hairdresser, more people appreciate them in a superficial way and this increases odds of finding a nice suitable person among all the superficial ‘nice-harcut’ interactions.

Getting better at poker, works in a similar way. It’s a numbers’ game. So go get your poker skills a haircut – regularly! Show us someone who’s consistently crushing over thousands of sessions, over decades, online and live and we’ll show you someone who’s not relying on run-good.

Just like Roy didn’t magically attract lightning out of thin air, poker crushers don’t just get hit by a wave of good cards every time they sit just because they are pros.

A few stories about Roy suggest that he was maybe borderline intentionally seeking to get struck by lightening, which is what successful poker players do. Success can strike like a lightening in this game but there is no guru one-fits-all formula becoming a winning poker player is no magic trick. Players with ambition put themselves in the path of success. On purpose.

How to Get Better at Poker (Without Getting Electrocuted)

To increase your chances of being struck by lightning (for science, let’s say), you’d probably:

• – go stand in open fields during a thunderstorm (with a kite maybe)
• – carry a metal rod (tall and vertically preferrably)
• – actively avoid shelter and seek high grounds

…and so on. You’d actively change your behavior to increase those odds.

Now let’s flip that logic.

If you want to get better at poker, wouldn’t you also change your behavior?

• – study hand histories
• – analyze ranges
• – use tools like solvers or training apps
• – talk hands with capable players
• – watch streams or coaching content

The fact is, poker education works.

It’s not even necessary to pay for some fancy masterclass. There is a lot of good free and paid content out there and it is key to recognise that playing poker for five, ten, or twenty years and still guessing at every river decision, comes from consuming flop-debauchery on poker trash media instead of actually studying the options available in terms of decisions in a particular spot. Spoiler alert – there has never been anything like ‘Answer D: shout at the dealer when you miss your monkey draw‘.

But I Don’t Have Time…

The game has evolved. Edges are thinner. Players are sharper. Tax considerations change. Travel expenses are higher. Putting in time is a necessity. One way or the other. And the ways are plentiful. It’s poker-content galore out there on the web: websites, social media, group chats, apps, webinars…

Poker education isn’t about memorizing charts or becoming a GTO robot. It’s about taking small, smart steps that increase chances of making better decisions: at the table – but also at the grocery store, at the hotel booking website, at the airline counter, at the bar… just like Roy probably increased his odds of catching another bolt every time he showed up to work during a storm.

TL;DR – Get Better to Get Better

Getting lucky is great. We all love it. But long-term success in poker comes from knowing more than (some, many, most) opponents; not from praying more to the poker gods every time you peel a turn OOP with a gutshot in 3-bet pot.

It’s easy: Study a little. Sweat less. Win more.

Because unlike lightning, we kinda can control how often we get zapped at the table.
