Moving to Las Vegas: Home of the Poker Players

If you’re a poker traveler who’s dreamed of establishing a base in Las Vegas, whether for a season of tournaments or longer term, now is a great time to carefully weigh the opportunity. I have been visiting Sin City as a player and photographer since the mid 2010s and I have established a base there over the last two to three years. Still no such thing as a home for the-rounder.net but we’re slowly getting there 🙂 This article presents some of the biggest lifestyle advantages and drawbacks we have identified over the years as Las Vegas is constantly evolving – and quickly. This article is meant to help decide whether Sin City suits your game and your life.

PROS

1. Tax-Friendly & Financially Smart

Nevada remains one of the few U.S. states with zero state income tax, making it attractive if you’ll have U.S.-sourced income (or want a base for U.S. tax planning). Additionally, although exploding on the Strip, the cost of living off Las Vegas Boulevard, remains relatively affordable compared to other major U.S. cities, making for more bankroll or travel budget to deploy.

Poker players are used to calculating risk versus reward, so they can look at buying a house in Vegas that way: In Vegas, the ‘tax/cost’ ration is lower than elsewhere in big-city U.S. .

2. Epic Lifestyle & World-Class Entertainment at Your Doorstep

Las Vegas delivers some of the best and fanciest entertainment options on the planet: dining, nightlife, shopping, live events and, importantly for poker players, constant access to live poker rooms. The hospitality and casino culture are built for people who travel, play, stay late and switch gears seamlessly and if you want your off-table action life to match your table degeneracy in bars, restaurants and clubs shows, Sin City has it all dialled in. On the other hand, there are a lot of resting and relaxation opportunities like spas, golfs and parks off the Strip. Additionally, the surrounding desert areas provide plenty of peace and calm for recovery and physical activity.

3. Base for Travel, Flexibility & Opportunity

With a major international airport connected to literally everywhere, colossal cultural or sports events and a transient population, Las Vegas offers flexibility and networking options like very few other cities in the world. Many home owners come during big series, rent their place when they’re on the road and move in again when they’re back. The real-estate market, although turbulent, still offers options, especially with the right local assist. Being in Las Vegas gives players proximity to the tournament scene plus a base for other U.S. or international travel.

For a poker nomad who wants a fixed home-base rather than constant hotels, that’s a strong setup.

CONS

1. Extreme Summer Climate & Utility Costs

While winters are mild, Las Vegas summers are brutal. Temperatures often well above 100 °F (38 °C), which drives up utility bills (AC, cooling …), restricts outdoor activity and imposes serious lifestyle constraints. For instance, the bare act of transiting and playing midday sessions can induce fatigue and heat may impact performance or downtime recovery significantly until one gets used to it.

2. Housing Market & Residential Cost Pressures

Although cost of living may compare favorably to coastal cities, housing and rental costs have been rising rapidly since the 2010. Finding a good deal base can be competitive. Depending on the target neighborhood and duration one may find fewer ‘steals’ than in previous years but it all comes down to knowing your hunting ground. Good thing we have Michelle Richey a.k.a. ‘Sassy’ on board with us. Balancing residence cost vs. quality time off-table is critical for players — she knows. 3. Transient Lifestyle and Community Limitations

As a city built for tourism and short-term stays, Las Vegas can feel less community-oriented than some other places. Some neighbourhoods have weaker local infrastructure (schools, transport) and fewer roots. For someone setting up a more long-term base (rather than just tournament-season stays), that may affect the living experience big time. Downtown Las Vegas has been going through great improvements over the last years. Summerlin and Henderson remain the nuts. We used to be in the Sumemrlin Hills and recently moved further South towards Spring Valley. These are all awesome areas.

Also, in grand Americain style, public transport is limited and you’ll often need a car or to call a taxi.

Final Thoughts for the Poker Traveler
